The City of Gera is - with a population of 108.000 inhabitants - the second largest city in the Federal State of Thuringia and is situated in the Eastern part of the region. Geographically speaking, Thuringia is the heart of Germany. The Federal State of Thuringia is one of the New Federal States of Germany.
Gera was documentary mentioned for the first time in 995. Today, many people are coming from far and near to visit the former capital and residence of the princedom Reuß.
Many places of interest attest still in our days to the historic background of Gera. Gera is also known as birthplace of the painter Otto Dix, for its Art Nouveau Theatre and the beautiful mansions in Wilhelminian and art nouveau style (e.g. Villa Schulenburg designed by Henry van der Velde). The City hosts the annual movie festival for children "Goldener Spatz" and in 2007 will present the national Garden Show.
