Municipality of FerraraMunicipality of Ferrara (Italy)

Art and Culture are the two distinctive signs of Ferrara. Between the city and the cultural system, there is a relation of mutual interdependence, one of the most important tokens of which is the legacy of Renaissance. The Castle, Palazzo Diamanti and Piazza Ariostea are its best known artistic treasures in a city that should be visited on a bicycle, the most common local means of transportation.

Ferrara - Veduta aerea del centro medievaleIn 1995, UNESCO declared it “World’s Heritage”, a city surrounded by monumental walls that enclose artistic treasures, which are even more magnificent in that they can be enjoyed in an urban fabric that alternates buildings with parks and gardens.

Ferrara was recently recognised as accessible to the population and to tourists, who for instance can make use of the Mobility Centre, providing special equipment for disabled people, or the Mobility Card. The surrounding wildlife sanctuaries are also accessible.

The activity of the Municipality of Ferrara for the CARE Project consists of collecting and analysing the information sources, such as publications, projects, works and researches about accessibility in connection with the reference geographical areas. It analyses needs on a regional, provincial and municipal scale.

As a project partner, it complies with the methods adopted by Italy (IG-VAE) and shared by all project partners.

Ferrara surveys the city’s recreational services and facilities which characterize urban leisure facilities in those cities where their features in terms of sustainability are detected. Then, it selects the best ones, to be submitted as ‘best practices’ for the ensuing educational and training activities.

Lastly, the Municipality of Ferrara takes part in the definition and selection of the facilities and the public and private institutions, including an institute in charge of coordinating all the parties involved in the project.
