Bologna, regional capital of Emilia Romagna, is placed in a strategic geographical position, in the heart of Italy, between Milan and Florence.

The surroundings are rich and interesting: the province is made up of 60 municipality and 927.820 inhabitants, while about 372.000 people live in the city. The medieval city center, one of the best preserved all along Europe, is characterized by 40 kilometers of arcades, which offer a shelter both from the sun and the rain, and by the red-coloured bricks of the buildings which make the city unique. The Two Towers, in the city center, are the symbol of Bologna, and are the last witnesses of almost 200 tower-houses, which dominated the city in the Medieval period. Apart from the history beneath palaces, squares, museums, churches and wonderful gardens, the city lives an intense life night and day, in the many wineries, theatres, open-air markets, groceries with the typical products which made Bologna famous all over the world.

Bologna Veduta torriThe city hosts the most ancient university worldwide, and has also been European Cultural Capital in 2000. It is also an important center for trade fairs all over Europe as concerns the number of exhibitors (27), with world-relevant trade fairs, like the ones for cosmetics, building industry and child books. It is also an important European transportation center: it is the first railway and highway center in Italy, and its international airport is constantly growing, connecting Bologna with all European capital cities.

The Municipality of Bologna takes part to the C.A.R.E. project together with the departments for Social Services and Health, and with the company Bologna Turismo srl, as well as with the Office for External Relationships and International Projects, which is connected to the activities of the Mayor.

Within the C.A.R.E. project, the municipality of Bologna contributes to the following activities:

  • Collection of existing information about the themes related to the project and to the collection of the needs of the population and of tourists as concerns accessible tourism;
  • Individuation of a tourist itinerary with structures and services which characterize leisure in Bologna, and detection of their accessibility;
  • Exchange of skills and know-how as concerns accessibility;
  • Contribution to the writing of the methodological guide for updating of tour operators;
  • Identification and selection of public and private subjects which will be part of the network;
  • Creation of three thematic networks, monitoring and detection of trade fairs and events, and participation to trade fairs related to accessibility.

Contribution to the organization of the final event.
